Heritage routs Vintage as Patriots roll behind star Devon Rivers

BRENTWOOD — Something special is happening seemingly every time Heritage running back Devon Rivers steps onto the field.

As a result, the Patriots remain undefeated.

In a 41-0 victory over Vintage on Friday night, the Fresno State-bound senior rushed for four touchdowns and 271 yards. He has topped 200 yards in each of Heritage’s four victories this season.

“It’s a pretty special moment but in-game, I don’t think about that,” Rivers said. “At the end of the day, I’m just trying to win the game. But looking back at it, it’s something special.”

Rivers continues to follow in the large footsteps paved by his father Ron and brother Ronnie, both former Fresno State stars.

The younger Rivers has 3,144 rushing yards in 25 varsity games.

“He’s one of those guys that come along once in a decade,” Heritage coach Dave Fogelstrom said. “I’ve been in the Bay Valley Athletic League 30 years and he’s one of the top guys I’ve seen.”

Heritage has found a jolt of success under Fogelstrom, who took over the struggling program in 2021.

In the two seasons before his arrival, the Patriots went 3-17.

Now Heritage is off to its best start since 2017.

“We have a great student body that’s just been waiting for something to cheer for,” Fogelstrom said. “We feel like the school has been reborn right now. There’s massive energy on campus, and (the students) make us play better every single time.”

The energy from the student section was electric Friday, from the moment Rivers plunged his way for a three-yard touchdown to give Heritage the lead in the first quarter.

“Our student section is really good, they’re always out there making it loud,” Rivers said. “We knew everybody was gonna be at this game. There was a lot of talk about it on campus. So it’s great to see the support.”

Rivers’ second touchdown came on another goal-line run that made it 14-0 heading into halftime.

The Patriots carried the momentum into the second half. Jeremiah Ruffin made a diving interception and Rivers followed with a 47-yard run to put the Patriots up 21-0.

Sophomore quarterback Austin Peters connected with Ruffin later in the quarter for a 15-yard touchdown to put the game away.
