Berkeley woman burned in fire dies

BERKELEY — An 80-year-old woman who suffered severe burns in a fire at her apartment last week has died, authorities said.

The woman suffered severe burns Jan. 11 after an electric hot plate in her apartment apparently caused her clothing to catch fire, authorities said.

Berkeley Fire Department firefighters responded to her fourth-floor apartment in the 2500 block of San Pablo Avenue within minutes of a smoke-alarm activation report and a call that a woman was on fire.

When firefighters arrived, they found bystanders pouring water on the woman, and provided care until paramedics took her to a San Francisco hospital’s burn facility for treatment

On Tuesday, as first reported by the Berkeley Scanner, firefighters learned the woman had died.

On Wednesday afternoon, the San Francisco medical examiner’s officer identified the woman as Hayot Anebi, and said her next of kin had been notified of her death.
